How to Scan Stocks with the TradingLead Screener
To scan stocks in TradingLead, open the Scan sidebar on /charts, choose which stocks to scan, pick a preset or build custom conditions, choose a timeframe and press Scan. Review the matches and warnings, refine with a follow-up scan if needed, then save the rules or add matches to a watchlist. Each scan uses your daily scan allowance.
What it does
This guide takes you through one complete scan in the TradingLead stock screener: choosing stocks, writing a rule, reading the results and keeping what is useful. The example finds stocks closing above their 20-day moving average with RSI at 60 or higher. The same steps work for any preset or rule.
How it works
The screener checks each stock in your chosen list against your rules, using stored cloud candles for one timeframe. It returns the stocks that match, along with warnings, coverage dates and any per-stock errors. The result is a snapshot of stored data and does not update as prices move. The screener also ignores your chart's data feed, so a broker feed on the chart does not change what the scan sees.
Each press of Scan sends a new request and uses one scan from your daily allowance. The sidebar shows how many scans you have left today.
Key capabilities
- Ready-made presets: gainers, losers, volume breakout, 52-week high and low, momentum, market summary
- Custom conditions with All conditions (AND) or Any condition (OR), plus nested groups
- Compare a field with a number or with Another indicator, such as close vs SMA20
- Timeframes from 5 minutes to monthly
- Saved screeners, Scanned History and follow-up scans on the matches
How to use
1. Open the Scan sidebar
Go to /charts and sign in. The chart workspace is described in getting started. Open the Scan sidebar on the right. If you are not signed in, the panel offers Sign in to screen and a Try sample screener button that uses four synthetic stocks.
2. Choose stocks to scan
Under Stocks to scan, pick one of your watchlists or use Choose my own symbols… to type tickers. The panel shows how many stocks will be scanned. Index symbols are excluded and listed. A list larger than your limit (at most 500) is rejected rather than cut down silently.
3. Pick what to find
Under Choose a scan, pick a preset such as Gainers or Volume breakout, or choose Custom conditions. For the example:
- Set Match conditions to All conditions (AND).
- Add a condition: field close, operator greater than, Compare with Another indicator, comparison field SMA20.
- Add another condition: field RSI14, operator greater than or equal, value 60.
Use Add AND/OR group for logic such as "RSI ≥ 60 or volume ratio ≥ 2". A rule can have up to 30 conditions.
4. Choose the timeframe and limits
Pick a timeframe such as daily (1D). If needed, open the extra settings to change Lookback days and Result limit. Weekly and monthly scans use completed periods only.
5. Run and read the results
Press Scan. Then:
- Read the warnings first. Results note that split and bonus history is not fully adjusted.
- Open Coverage dates and missing symbols. A missing result is not a non-match.
- Click a row to open that stock on the chart.
If nothing matches, the panel says "No matches in this cloud snapshot". Change the rules or date and scan again.
6. Refine, save and reuse
- Refine: run a new scan on just the returned or selected stocks to narrow the list step by step. The comparison chain lives in this tab only, but each run is kept in Scanned History.
- Save the screener: under Saved screener, use Save as new… to keep the rule. Loading it later applies it to your current watchlist and does not run it automatically.
- Save matches: choose a Destination watchlist or Create a watchlist. This adds symbols to a TradingLead watchlist only and places no broker orders.
- Scanned History reopens recent results without using allowance.
Next, set price alerts on the stocks you shortlisted.
Limitations
- Scans read stored candles. Use them for research shortlists, not live entry signals.
- Scan allowance, stocks per scan and saved-screener counts depend on your account; see pricing.
- Reuse if under 60 seconds still uses a scan. Recalculate (bypass cache) reads stored candles again but does not pull newer market data.
- Cancelling stops the browser wait, but the server may still finish the scan and count it.
- Custom SQL is included with TradingLead Pro and during the free trial; without SQL screener access it appears disabled.
- Matches are not trade recommendations.
FAQ
Can I scan intraday? Yes, on 5, 15 and 60-minute stored candles. These are snapshots, not live ticks.
Can I combine presets? Classic strategies can run together. For presets, express the combined logic as custom conditions.
Where are my saved screeners? In the Saved screener dropdown, stored in your account.

Frequently asked questions
- Why does my scan show fewer stocks than my watchlist?
- Index instruments are excluded from stock screening and listed separately. Stocks with missing data appear as errors, not non-matches. Check the coverage details below the results.
- Does changing a rule rerun the scan?
- No. Settings only run when you press Scan. The table keeps showing the previous snapshot and says the setup changed.
- Does reopening Scanned History cost a scan?
- No. Opening a saved result snapshot never reruns the scan or uses allowance. Running the same scan again does.
- Can I scan without an account?
- You can try a sample screener with four synthetic stocks. Real scans need a signed-in TradingLead account.
