How to Build a Breakout Stock Screener in India

A breakout screener narrows a stock universe to candidates near or beyond a defined price level, ideally with sufficient volume and liquidity. TradingLead's Scan sidebar supports presets and custom field comparisons on stored cloud candles. A scan is a research snapshot, not a live breakout alert or a recommendation to enter a trade.

Separate a breakout from its supporting filters

Define the price level first: yesterday's high, a recent consolidation high or a longer-term high are different hypotheses. A condition such as close above a moving average only describes trend; it does not prove that price has broken a range.

Volume can support the hypothesis, but it does not guarantee follow-through. A price gap on thin trading may pass a simple screen and still be difficult to trade.

Build a shortlist with available fields

TradingLead's Scan sidebar provides presets and custom rules. In the custom builder, use All conditions (AND) when every filter must pass. Choose a field, operator and a number or another compatible field.

An illustrative research template is:

PurposeCondition to look for in the available catalog
Basic liquidityVolume above a minimum you choose
Trend contextClose above an available moving-average field
ParticipationVolume above an available volume-average field
Breakout definitionA relevant prior-high comparison, only if the catalog offers it

If the exact breakout level cannot be expressed with available fields, do not substitute an unrelated condition and call it a breakout. Use trend and volume filters for the shortlist and check the level manually on the chart.

Check time and price before acting

Cloud screening is separate from the broker feed used on your chart. Read the scan's snapshot time and warnings, then inspect current candles on the candidate chart. For intraday research, a daily snapshot cannot establish that a five-minute breakout is happening now.

Write down why each candidate qualifies, its invalidation level and the spread or liquidity concern. Then evaluate the rule with historical examples rather than buying every scan match.

See the full screening workflow for setup and alerts for the separate client-monitored alert limitations.

Steps

  1. Open /charts, then Scan, and sign in for real cloud screening data.
  2. Choose the universe and timeframe before selecting a preset or custom rules.
  3. Use the available price, volume and trend fields to create a shortlist.
  4. Run the scan and inspect the snapshot time, warnings and matched values.
  5. Open candidate charts and verify the actual breakout level and current market context.

Limitations

  • Cloud snapshots are not live prices; an apparent breakout can be stale by the time you inspect it.
  • The available field catalog defines what can be screened; do not assume arbitrary rolling-high formulas are supported.
  • A matched screen does not account for your order size, fill quality or suitability.

Frequently asked questions

Does above SMA20 prove a breakout?
No. It is a trend filter. A breakout must refer to a specific prior high, range boundary or other level, and the chart should confirm that definition.
Are TradingLead scans live quotes from my broker?
No. Cloud scans use stored candle snapshots and are separate from the chart feed.
Can I compare two screener fields?
Yes. TradingLead's custom-rule builder offers comparison with another compatible field. Use the fields and operators actually offered in the catalog.
