What Are Support and Resistance?
Support and resistance are price levels or zones where traders study earlier reactions and possible future responses. TradingLead's lines, rays, rectangles and notes can document these hypotheses, but an annotation does not guarantee that price will hold or reverse.
What the terms mean
Support describes an area where analysts study whether buying interest might interrupt a decline. Resistance describes an area where they study whether selling interest might interrupt a rise.
These are interpretations of price behavior, not physical barriers. They may be represented as exact lines or wider zones, depending on the research method. A chart cannot certify future interest from a historical reaction alone.
How to study a level
Start with completed candles and record why you chose the area. Possible observations include an earlier turning point or repeated reactions, but the observation and its future hypothesis should remain separate.
Keep the instrument and timeframe fixed while making the first assessment. An index, an equity and a futures contract are different series. Changing interval can also change the detail visible around a zone.
Do not keep shifting an old level until it fits later price action. That turns a review into a hindsight illustration rather than a record of what was knowable at the time.
Marking zones in TradingLead
Use the drawing tools to place a horizontal line or ray, outline a zone with a rectangle and add a text note. Lock a completed annotation to reduce accidental movement.
In a split layout, activate the intended pane first. Symbol linking is not a promise that drawings are automatically copied between panes.
Record the reason for the zone and what would make your interpretation questionable. This is a research habit, not an instruction to place an order.
Limitations
Price can move through a marked area. Missing history, source differences and changing market conditions can weaken an interpretation. A named pattern or manually drawn zone is not a guaranteed trading signal.
FAQ
Does a support line submit a stop or entry order?
No. A chart drawing is an annotation, not live broker execution.
Where should I start learning chart context?
Read candlestick charts and timeframes, then practice documenting observations without profit expectations.
Limitations
- Levels and zones are interpretations, not guaranteed barriers.
- Hindsight can bias historical annotations.
- Feed, timeframe and instrument identity affect the observed chart.
Frequently asked questions
- Is support an exact price?
- It can be drawn as a line, but analysts also study broader zones. Neither representation guarantees a response at that price.
- How can I mark resistance in TradingLead?
- Use a horizontal line or ray for a level, a rectangle for a zone and text to record why you marked it. Check the active chart pane before drawing.
- Does breaking resistance guarantee an upward move?
- No. A historical level or apparent breakout does not establish what price will do next, and false breaks can occur.
