How to Practise Trading with Bar Replay
To practise with TradingLead Bar Replay, open Charts, choose a historical candle and reveal completed bars with Next or Play. For recorded simulated orders, pause replay and choose Trade to start a virtual-money session; native playback itself does not place trades.
What this practice does
The purpose of replay practice is to make an observation before seeing later candles. A completed historical chart makes every move look easier to explain. Replay lets you slow that process down and distinguish what you knew from what you learned afterward.
TradingLead separates chart playback from virtual trading. Start with native Bar Replay to study candles. Add a paper account through Trade only when you want order records, costs and balances. Neither workflow places real broker orders.
Before you start
Open the main Charts workspace. Check the symbol, selected feed, interval and historical date. Wait for actual candles rather than assuming a chart's symbol label proves the data is available.
For Indian-market practice, Nifty is a useful context only when that feed has the requested data. Do not assume a daily chart means five-minute history is available. The documented May 2024 Nifty history check has 15- and 60-minute cloud data but no five-minute cloud data; it is an example of a coverage boundary, not a guarantee for another date.
Choose one learning question, such as whether your written description of a range changes after the next candle. This is an educational exercise, not a rule for taking a live position.
How it works: choose a starting point
- Select Replay in the chart header.
- Confirm the notice.
- Pick a historical candle on the chart.
- Wait for replay history to become ready.
The chosen candle starts hidden. Your first observation therefore uses the preceding visible history, not that candle's completed high, low and close. If you cancel selection with Escape, you are cancelling the picker, not choosing End.
Select Next to reveal one completed candle. Before advancing again, write what changed and what did not. Use chart drawings to mark an observation if helpful, but avoid rewriting an earlier annotation simply because you now know the outcome.
Control the pace and timeframe
Use Play for continuous playback and Pause for review. The speed control accepts 0.1–200 bars per second. That is a configured target; historical loading and chart rendering can make playback slower.
When the chart is focused, native replay supports:
| Shortcut | Action |
|---|---|
| Shift + Space | Play or pause |
| Shift + Right | Next candle while paused |
| Shift + Left | Previous candle while paused |
| Shift + Up / Down | Faster or slower preset |
Use the information button for the active player's shortcut guide. Plain Space is not the native play/pause shortcut.
Changing the native timeframe pauses playback and keeps its clock. A larger candle remains hidden until its whole period has ended. Daily, weekly and monthly bars use UTC calendar completion, not an assumed NSE session close. If another interval lacks data, return to a working interval or follow the displayed recovery message; missing candles are not reconstructed from another timeframe.
Start recorded virtual trading
Choose Trade beside replay. Review the starting balance and advanced settings, including commission, slippage and whether short positions are allowed. Sign in, then choose Start practice.
This explicitly changes to the paper simulation player. No strategy or prior backtest is required. The account uses the symbol's reported quote currency or generic units; do not assume every starting balance is INR.
The paper controls provide Buy/Sell actions and order tickets. Tickets support market, limit, stop and stop-limit orders with optional stop/target settings. Check the resulting order state: a submitted instruction may be rejected rather than filled.
Manual historical market entries and exits use the latest revealed close with costs, without moving the cursor. Pending limit/stop orders and protective triggers use later eligible candles. A new stop cannot use the entry candle's earlier high or low to create a retrospective exit. These rules should be part of your practice notes, because they differ from live execution.
Review and finish
After an exit, open the paper trade list and select View on chart. Compare the recorded price and costs with your earlier observation. Several partial exits may belong to one position, so do not count every row as an independent setup.
Choose End to return to recent chart history. The locally saved paper account remains available; End does not free an active simulation slot. Three active slots are shared with backtests, so use session management when capacity is full.
See review your trades on chart for the next stage.
Limitations
Replay reveals closed candles, not every intrabar price change. Native chart studies are not fills or a strategy backtest. Paper results depend on history, cost settings and execution assumptions.
Direct paper sessions can load later closed candles in bounded pages. If the raw history window rolls, balances and trade records remain, but full-history candle analytics become unavailable. Sessions are device-local, not a cloud backup.
TradingLead uses a five-day platform trial followed by subscription access; see pricing. This guide makes no claim of permanent free replay.
FAQ
Can I switch intervals after starting paper practice?
Single-stock sessions support guarded interval changes; multi-stock accounts keep one shared interval. Do not assume native replay's timeframe flexibility applies unchanged after the Trade handoff.
What is the difference between Practice Labs and replay?
Practice Labs (tradinglead.in/lab/practice) teach controls and Pine workflows on synthetic daily prices. They are not live NSE data or a substitute for checking market-history coverage in Charts.
Does a successful practice session prove a live strategy?
No. Replay can help you inspect a process, but simulated outcomes do not establish live fills, liquidity, emotional behaviour or future returns.
Steps
- Open Charts and check the symbol, feed, timeframe and available historical data.
- Select Replay, confirm the notice and choose a starting candle.
- Use Next or Play to reveal completed candles; pause to record observations.
- Choose Trade if you want a virtual account, then review the starting balance and cost settings.
- Place only simulated orders through the paper controls and check their recorded outcomes.
- Review exit legs with View on chart; End preserves the local paper account.
Limitations
- The chosen native starting candle is initially hidden.
- Replay is closed-candle playback, not tick playback.
- Paper accounts are saved on this device only.
- A working daily chart does not guarantee intraday history.
- Trade handoff changes to a separate simulation player.
Frequently asked questions
- Do I need a strategy or earlier backtest to practise?
- No. Trade can create a manual paper session directly from paused native replay without a strategy or prior backtest.
- Can I practise Nifty intraday with replay?
- Use Nifty only where your selected feed has the historical symbol, date and intraday interval. Availability at one interval does not establish coverage at another.
- What price does a manual replay market order use?
- It uses the latest revealed close with configured slippage and fees, without advancing the replay cursor. This is a simulation, not a broker fill.
- Are Practice Labs historical NSE sessions?
- No. The /lab/practice exercises use synthetic daily prices to teach Pine and product controls. Use the main Charts replay workflow for available market history.
